Metastatic melanoma - also called stage 4 melanoma – develops when melanoma spreads to other parts of the body. For a number of reasons, treating the disease is hard.
This fact, combined with the growing number of people diagnosed with melanoma, means that deaths caused by the disease have grown in recent decades. In 2009, 68,000 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in the United States. And 8,700 people died from a melanoma-related illness.
As a result, private and public organizations are doing large amounts of research to find better treatment options.
